The Eclectic Approach

This thesis, after making a comparative study of various English approaches and methods, presents a new approach—the Eclectic Approach.It is observed that a language teaching method may lead to different results under different circumstances. There does not exist any one teaching approach or method applicable to any teaching situations and maintaining its dominence over approaches or methods in all cases. The author of this dissertation deems that an effective teaching method for a certain teaching purpose must be one which adopts the merits of various methods, fits the teaching context, and meets the needs of the students.The aim of the thesis is to probe a new approach to English teaching suitable in TEFL in China. Starting from an analysis of the various teaching approaches and method, it puts forth the Eclectic Approach, and discusses the background behind it and its characteristics. Then, it presents sample lesson to illustrate how the approach can be put to practice.
