In ancient Chinese language, " 然(ran)" , " 如 (ru)" , " è‹¥ (ruo)", "å°”(er)", " 焉(yan)" etc, are usually attached behind some notional words, thus forming additional adjectives or adverbs as modifiers, which we here refers to suffix "然(ran)" series. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on a preliminary study on the forming and evolvement of the suffix "然(ran)" series of ancient Chinese language. The whole paper could be divided into two parts. Part I is a brief statement of suffix "然(ran)" .In Part I ,we presents a systematic analysis of studies in this area already made by former experts. From the viewpoint of linguistic theory, we thus defines its role and status. We selects and defines suffix "然(ran)" series, which is confined only to suffix members like " 然 (ran)" , " 如 (ru)" , " è‹¥ (ruo)", "å°”(er)", "焉 (yan)" and "而 (æ´) (er)" .What this disertation concerns is this certain suffix throughout entire ancient Chinese language period.Part II is specific analysis of suffix "然(ran)" series. Here, we studies the six suffixes respectively. In the specific research of suffix " 然 (ran)" series,we takes great pains in two aspects: quantitive statistics and the combining of dynamic and static state study. Within every seperate section, we make a conclusion: The part of speech of those words by suffixing "然(ran)" series is both adjectives and adverbs .The part of speech of those words wich can combine with suffix "然(ran)" series are: adjectives , adverbs, werbs, nouns and echoic words. Those words by suffixing "然(ran)" series can act as adverbial modifier, predicate, attribute.complement, subject and object. The modality of those words by suffixing " 然 (ran)" is mainly attached behind monosyllabic words, disyllables and the words like AB or AABB.
