Translation Of Culture-loaded Elements In The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

With the increasing international exchange, cross-cultural communication has become an indispensable part in people's life. Multiculturalism has generally been considered as an essential way to carry out intercultural communication. Since translation is a major means of interlingual communication, to achieve successful translation of our national cultural wealth has become a demanding yet glorious and duty-bound task for the translators. Literary works, as an important part of a nation's cultural heritage, have always been a hard-to-crack nut in translation for its rich containment of culture-loaded elements. This thesis is devoted to the discussion of the translation of culture-loaded elements with illustrations from the modern drama Teahouse.In the said internationalized environment, translation studies have taken a cultural turn. We know that translation studies are of multidisciplinary nature and many subjects can be embedded to it. Relevance theory, originally put forward in the pragmatic field, is mainly concerned with communication and cognition. The present thesis borrows some of its advocacy, like the nature of communication;the importance of context;the concept of relevance and optimal relevance etc into translation studies and proves that relevance theory can be very enlightening in the realm of translation studies.
