The concept of "simplicity" was a category which taken seriously in western aesthetics and poetics in the 20 th century and it appeared accompanied by the deepening of art knowledge over the last hundred years.It chiefly took practice of painting among ocular art as object for its theoretic generalization. In china, there was obvious "simplicity" conciousness in Chinese ancient painting theory and we can aslo find that in painting history .And in Chinese historical classical paints ,the characteristic of "simpcility " was expressed distinctly. "Simplicity" can provide a special angle for digging new meaning of Chinese traditional painting theory.The essay analyzed the "simplicity" idea in Chinese ancient painting theory and its incarnating in paints,connecting with the demostrating of "simplicity "under western culture and language environment.The disserstation is mainly composed of three sections—the leading dissertation, the main section and the epilogue.In the leading part,I analysed the origin and meaning of "simplicity"and simply stated some idea, some aesthetics categories and certain expression in painting in Chinese ancient painting and its theory ,which are interrelated with it.The main portion of the paper was divided in three chapters:the first chapter disscussed the idea of advocating simple in ancient painting theory in which the relationship between "shape" and "intention","void"and "concret" embodied that in the aspect of aesthetics Chinese ancient pianting was in pursuit of"simplicity";the second chapter probed into the expression of "simplicity" conciousness in Chinese ancient painting theory—such as "pen and ink" criterion in ancient painting ,the frugality of brushwork material and the point view of the relationship between careful and delicate brushwork and simple brushwork,etc.;the third chapter discussed cultural origin of "simplicity" consciousness to the point—the Confucianism,the Taoism and the Buddihism,especially the art viewpoint as "wateriness", "hollowness"and "nimbus" in the Taoism which greatly affect "simplicity"conciousness in Chinese ancient painting theory.In the epilogue of the paper ,1 emphasized on the most characteristic viewpoints about the whole paper,which was based on hackling content of the first two sections.And it also pointed out the influence on poetic theory and drama theory,which was arosed by the idea of "simplicity" in Chinese ancient painting theory. Finally,the epilogue stated something about the important sense of studying the "simplicity" in our modern time.
