The specialty is that numerals and quantifiers are seldom used alone and they are often used together. The numeral phrases of the modern Chinese and Vietnamese have some common basic characteristics. The thesis is endeavored to make a comparative study on the structure, semantics and syntactic functions of modern Chinese and Vietnamese. Through the study, on one hand, we can understand more clearly the quantitative phrases of Chinese and Vietnamese and their differences and similarities. On the other hand, it has provided a good reference for the Vietnamese to study Chinese and for Chinese to study Vietnamese. The thesis is divided into six parts. The first part is about the structural forms of quantitative phrases of Chinese and Vietnamese. It describes the classification of numerals and quantifiers in modern Chinese and Vietnamese and their differences and similarities of the structural forms of the quantitative phrases. The second part is about the semantic types of the quantitative phrases in Chinese and Vietnamese. It inspects the semantics of the quantitative phrases and the differences and similarities of the corresponding structural forms. The third, fourth and fifth parts are all about the syntactic functions of the quantitative phrases. The quantitative phrases can act as attributive, adverbial, complement, predicate, subject, object and so on. So the usage is very complex. The three parts have described the differences and similarities of the quantitative phrases in acting as various syntactic elements in detail. The sixth part has explored the deviances of Vietnamese students in using Chinese quantitative phrases. It has classified and analyzed the deviances and also found out the causes of the deviances so as to provide some personal suggestions for teaching Chinese quantitative phrases as a foreign language.By far, there are no special theses of comparative study on quantitative phrases of Chinese and Vietnamese.
