Onomatopoeia is a formation of words and rhetoric,which is called onomatopoeia in Chinese and tr tuong thanh or tu mo phong am thanh in Vietnamese.Chinese and Vietnamese are the two languages that have rich and diverse onomatopoeia,each of the language has its own long history,its own characteristics and its own unique features.In recent years,much attention has been paid to studying Chinese onomatopoeia,which is an important research direction in the aspects of phonetics,semantics,grammar and pragmatics.However,the academic study of Vietnamese onomatopoeia attracts less attention from researchers,mostly lacking of contrastive study of bilingual and multilingual onomatopoeia.Based on the theory of contrastive linguistics,this thesis attempts to study the Chinese and Vietnamese onomatopoeia from four aspects:the pronunciation,semantics,grammar and pragmatics.Due to the difference of language structures and thinking modes,there are some differentiation between Chinese and Vietnamese.However,regarding to the carrier of the objective voice,Chinese Onomatopoeia and Vietnamese onomatopoeia should have some similarities.Based on the data collection,statistics,comparison and induction process,the author summarizes the similarities and differences between Chinese and Vietnamese onomatopoeia from four levels:phonetics,grammar,semantics and pragmatics.This thesis consists of seven chapters.The first part,the introduction,which is the main research subject of this study,mentions the research methods,and a detailed introduction of Chinese and Vietnamese onomatopoeia research overview.The second part is the summary of the research of Chinese onomatopoeia,and the comparison of onomatopoeia.The third chapter is the comparison of the phonetic level,which refers to the comparison of the phonetic structure of the onomatopoeia and the inner syllable of the speech,in order to obtain the similarities and differences between the two languages.The fourth chapter is the semantic part,which describes the similarities and differences between the two languages,by reflecting the semantic type contrast and semantic transfer contrast.The fifth chapter is the contrastive part of grammar,which mainly states the differences and similarities between Chinese and Vietnamese onomatopoeia.The sixth chapter is the comparison of pragmatic aspects,which describes the use of onomatopoeia in the two languages to create rhetorical effects,reflecting the stylistic color.The seventh chapter summarizes the research results of this thesis.
