This thesis uses "the central place theory", "the industrial structure theory", "the global city theory" and so on to review the unique historical development course of New York to develop from an ordinary port city to the global city. And it analyzes the development path of New York to become the global city emphatically. Through the analysis of the development course and development path of New York, and the summarization of the experience of New York to become the global city, I hope it can give some cities of our country, which want to be global cities, some beneficial advices.New York's development course has two historical leaps. The first leap was from the ordinary port city to become the first place city in America. Early New York was an ordinary port city. During the transportation revolution time, New York developed rapidly under the common function of the transportation facility improvement and the industrialization. Between 1840 and 1870, New York has determined it first place city status in America. The second leap was that New York became the global city. Between 1870 and 1945, New York's economy kept on developing in high speed. After the Second World War, as a result of American nation region readjustment of the economic structure and some other reasons, New York's economic status has dropped gradually. But New York has not failed. It re-established the city status after 1975, became global city and the world first place city finally.New York's success is not only own to its adaptation to the global economical environment, but also its own geographical position, the social environment, the administration system, the humanities environment and so on. In a short sentence, the development path of New York to become the global city is that it mainly depends upon its own urban economy development, adapting to the world economic development current, and keeping its cultural characteristics. In the course of analyzing the historical course and development path of New York to become the global city, I summarize some experience and lessons, considering the common rules of global cities. I hope it can give some big cities of our country some beneficial advices.
