The Development Of Producer Services In New York City And Its Status As A Global City: Since The 1990s

Producer services different from ordinary consumer services are a kind of service industries, which provide services, such as financing, legal, advertising and accounting for other industries. The development of producer services is synchronized with that of globalization, and both of them interact on each other. In addition, Producer services are inclined to gather to a few of the world's major cities, which are called global cities. Therefore, producer services have a close relation with global cities. To investigate the relation between producer services and global cities, the paper selects the New York City as the object of case study, and analyzes the content of producer services in NYC, the influence of producer services for NYC, and the status of NYC as a global city.The paper contains three parts: the first part studies the background of industrial restructuring in NYC, then researches the content of producer services, and thus approaches the characteristics of producer services in NYC; the second part analyzes the influence of producer services for NYC, which includes NYC's employment structure, income structure and business income tax structure; the third part examines the changes of urban function and challenges faced by NYC as a global city. Finally, we conclude that producer services in NYC strengthen the competitiveness of NYC, raise its status in the world, however, also bring range of issues, such as the polarization between rich and poor, as well as issues of management. In brief, producer services are the mainstay industry of NYC, which affect every aspect of NYC, and push NYC to the forefront of the world stage.
