English Gothic novel is a kind of special novel, which produces in the end of18th century. It was full of old castles, gods and ghosts, and it frequently takes evil,violence, terrorist murder and black content as its theme. This novel can attractmassive readers because it gives frightened experience to people. This experience isemotion of religious awe, portrayal of miserable and lonely life. It can promotehuman's spiritual strength and purifies human's mind.The outburst of the French Revolution has greatly promoted the prosperity of theGothic novel .Brutality and ugliness of human nature exposed in French Revolutionsharked inner world of Gothic novelists deeply. Meanwhile, the production of suchterror has its deep culture background.In philosophy terror is a kind of feeling, whichcoordinates with philosophy of empiricism in England. In literature, the terror ofGothic is a kind of religious emotion. Obviously it has received the thought of Bible.In addition to this, it has also learned from the literature of Rome literature,Shakespeare's tragedy, sentimentalist novel and the creation technique of graverypoetry. Analyzing text thoroughly, Gothic author often start the story with dangerousand natural background, ghastly and fearful Gothic style construction in order to buildthe frightened atmosphere. This strange and full frightened special environment,which was full of terror, makes characters in the story and readers themselves toisolate from the reality. That makes them to know the external strength and thehelplessness and miserableness of individuals. At the same time, Gothic novel takegreat effort to describe fearful and supernatural scene, violent murder scene as well asthe isolated and distorted mind in order to strengthen physiological and psychologicalfrightened experience, And this kind of description has solid theory basis. 'Poetics',which was written by Aristotle, broke through forbidden area, which was establishedby Plato. After that notonly the popular writer craves in its creation but also many first-class writers alsohave interest to it. They created the Gothic novel, which enjoyed great popularity, orthey massively utilized the technique of the Gothic novel to their own creation .Thusit has formed the extremely prominent Gothic tradition in English and Americanliterature.
