Nowadays in the foreign language teaching field more attention has been paid to the learners' affective factor than to the teachers'. Among them ,motivation is one of the most important factors, on which much research has been done. Garden and Lamber divided foreign language learning motivation into instrumental and integrative motivation .It can also be divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation or long-term motivation and short-term one. Besides, there is achievement motivation, resultative motivation and so on. All these learning motivations have played an important role in foreign language teaching and learning. In Chaoyang Health School there are some students who major in both English and nursing despite their poor basis in English. They are trained to take care of foreign patients in China or to work as nurses abroad after graduation. 180 of them from Grade One was given a small-scale questionnaire to investigate their learning motivation, based on their second-term final English examination achievements. The study revealed that : l)The majority of the English-nursing students' English learning motivation need to be adjusted ,though, generally speaking, better than that of the students from other vocational schools,2)Most of the English-nursing students' English learning motivation are instrumental motivation or task-based motivation.3)There is no difference in the types of English learning motivation between successful learners and unsuccessful leamers.4)Whether the students can sustain their effort in English learning is important in deciding whether they can be successful learners or not.Based on the study, several practical suggestions are put forward:1) Stimulate the students' interest and curiosity.2)Meet students' needs. 3) Create a supportive learning atmosphere. 4)Build up learners' self-confidence and self-determination. 5)Set up short-term and long-term goals .6) Pay attention to the importance of both initiating and sustaining motivation..7) Give on-time assessment and feedback. 8) Develop students' sense of responsibility and independence.9) Organize various activities.10)Emphasize on teacher's personality influencing students' motivation.
