This study is undertaken to describe, classify and analyze word substitution (wd3) errors in Chinese college students' interlanguage through contrastive analysis and error analysis.4099 wd3 errors are retrieved from st3 and st4, two sub-corpora of CLEC. These errors are firstly classified into ten word classes in the hope of investigating the characteristics of their distributions and representations. Based upon the results obtained in the above analysis, errors of over literal translations are categorized into interlingual errors on account of L1 transfer;and other four types (misuse of words with similar meanings, overuse of general words, misuse of words with similar spellings, and grammar-related errors) are sorted into intralingual errors, originating from learners' incompleteness of linguistic knowledge. Then, interlingual errors and intralingual errors are further described respectively. Interlingual errors contain culture transfer, lexis transfer and grammar transfer. Intralingual errors present themselves as errors of vocabulary forms, errors of vocabulary meanings and errors of incomplete application of grammatical rules. Lastly, a comprehensive analysis is carried out to explore the possible underlying causes of these wd3 errors.Conclusions are drawn that distributions of wd3 errors in st3 and st4 follow a sequence of noun-verb-preposition-adjective-adverb-pronoun-conjunction-article from the most to the least in number;there are 981 interlingual errors and 3118 intralingual errors;and these errors are triggered by both internal and external factors.
