"Deceptive Equivalence" In The Translation Of Eileen Chang's Novellas And Short Stories

This dissertation examines the English translation of Eileen Chang's novellas and short stories,which was rendered by American scholar and translator Karen S.Kingsbury.The theoretical framework of this dissertation is literary stylistics,and the starting point is the concept of “deceptive equivalence” put forth by the scholar Shen Dan in her Literary Stylistics and Fictional Translation(2017).The phenomena of“deceptive equivalence” existing in the translation of Kingsbury are approached from three aspects,i.e.,lexical expression,syntax,and speech and thought presentation.This dissertation is aimed to classify and characterize the phenomena of “deceptive equivalence”,find out their causes,describes the obstacles induced by “deceptive equivalence” to the re-presentation of the literary and aesthetic effects of the original text in the translation,and finally give some reasonable and practical solutions.The dissertation will make a systematic analysis of the translation of Eileen Chang's novellas and short stories.The dissertation can provide translation ideas and practical methods for future translators engaged in the translation of Eileen Chang's works.Namely,translators analyze the original text from the perspective of literary stylistics,pay attention to and analyze the parts and elements of the original text that may cause “deceptive equivalence”,avoid the occurrence of “deceptive equivalence”in the translation,and enable the translation to achieve functional equivalence and reproduce “flavor” of the original text to the greatest extent.
