Characteristics Of Translation Activities In The Cultural Communication Between China And The West In The Late Ming And Early Qing Period

This thesis is an attempt to investigate the translation activities of the late Ming and early Qing period from the double perspective of cultural communication and translation studies. The aim of the study is to summarize the characteristics of the translation activities as well as the target texts of the period, and to discuss the features and probe the causes of the cultural communication of the time. Starting from an objective description of the translation activities and target texts, the thesis summarizes the characteristics of equality and mutuality of the cultural communication between China and the West of the period, and explores the causes of this situation in the cultural exchange. The thesis also briefly deals with the effect of the arrival of missionaries in China and the influence of the introduction of Chinese works in the West.The thesis consists of six parts:The introduction gives an account of the background, objective, procedure and methodology of the research, and explains the general structure of the thesis.Chapter One, "A Survey of the Translation Activities of the Late Ming and Early Qing Period", reviews the translation activities of the period, explaining their background, characteristics and the features of the target texts.Chapter Two, "Translation of Western Works and the Chinese Spread of Western Learning", a survey of the Western works, as classified by subjects, translated and introduced into China, explains their main contents, and discusses their influence on different subjects in China.Chapter Three, "Translation of Chinese works and the Western Spread of Chinese Learning", gives a survey of classified Chinese workstranslated and introduced into the West, and comments on the influence of some specific works in certain fields in the West.Chapter Four, "Cultural Communication between China and the West", discusses the features of cultural communication between China and the West in the late Ming and early Qing period as shown by the translation activities of the period, illustrates them with examples, and explores the causes of such cultural exchange.The conclusion recapitulates the main points made in the previous chapters and states the implications of the research.
