We should learn more about the evolvement of traditional western painting when we seek to develop Chinese oil painting and make it localized. The indirect method and direct method of western oil painting are so complex and profound that we should, instead of taking a part for the whole in learning and using them, take them as the basis on which we analyze and compare their respective language character, make use of them selectively, and develop our own individual language. Therefore, it is very important, to Chinese oil painting and even Chinese painting, to find more language styles (especially the evolvement of traditional language) for selective researches. At a critical time when western art is striving for new change and development, the most significant project Chinese oil painting is facing is by no means simple imitation of the western conception or endless pursuing. Instead, it will be to establish modern Chinese oil painting pattern based upon our own cultural background. Such researches and attempts on traditional painting language can keep our painting forms from being too simplistic and help us obtain a diversity of esthetic judgments in comparative researches. This thesis explores the origin of western painting languages along with the evolvement of traditional European Tempera painting system. Development of the indirect method and direct method permeates discussion on different aspects including technique evolvement from ancient 胶彩 to modern oil painting, the relationship between technique and spirit in western traditional painting, use of multiple materials, andintervention of art concept. The purpose is to probe into the current situation and developmental problems of Chinese oil painting through systematical perception of indirect and direct languages so as to diversify Chinese oil painting language context.Nowadays, Chinese oil painters are trying very hard to find an appropriate interface among material language, modeling language and color language. The development of indirect method and language, which played an important role in Fusion with and Variation the existing direct system, has undoubtedly made it possible to rejoin multiple art elements. We think artists should keep exploring individualized art language, getting rid of the stale and bringing forth the fresh, on an understanding of traditions and a re-comprehension of existing regulations. Only in this way can we find a brand new promising art dimension.
