| This article is mainly divided into four parts:The first part: Arrange and review commentaries and the research situation about"seeking wonder and striving for the new"involved in Li Yu's vernacular short stories in three periods. In the first period, there were scholars'commentaries of Qing Dynasty mainly on prefaces and commentaries about Li Yu's "soundless play" and "12 Buildings". They are piece-like comprehending and capriccios with profound and appropriate opinions while scattered and unsystematic. In the second period, there were few research articles about Li Yu's novel. Only Sun Kaidi's research is worth being paid attention, especially his "The old man Li Li and 12 Buildings" which established the cornerstone for the modern scholars'studying about Li Yu. In his articles, Mr. Sun noted the characteristic of"seeking wonder and striving for the new"in Li Yu's novel, but he did not conduct the thorough research. In the third period, since the time of the reform and open policy, the stage of independent research about Li Yu's work begins. Although there are many comprehensive commentary monographs, the paper which studies"seeking wonder and striving for the new"in Li Yu's novel is actually few. Some articles involve Li Yu's concept of"seeking wonder and striving for the new"more or less when the authors elaborate their own viewpoints. But these elaborations are partial, and no one takes the thought as one kind of novel theory to study, also nobody makes the definition and the thorough elaboration of the connotation and the extension of"seeking wonder"in Li Yu's novel. Therefore, the thorough and systematic research in the concept of"seeking wonder"in Li Yu's vernacular short stories is extremely necessary.The second part: Elaborate the history of the concept of"seeking wonder"in Chinese classical novel as well as analyze the concept of"seeking wonder"which appears in Li Yu's novel creation.
