With the development of the researches on contrastive discourse analysis (CDA), more and more attention has been paid to the CDA of English and Chinese discourses in political, economic, cultural and environmental fields. However, few researches have ever been conducted in terms of football commentary (FC). Many linguists have also attached great importance to the stylistic features of news discourses. The stylistic features of news discourses in national and comprehensive newspapers can be different from those in local newspapers; the stylistic features of news discourses in newspapers, magazines or on radio, TV, Internet are obviously different. There are different subject matters (mainly about politics, sports and law) and different types of literatures (mainly about news report, feature story, commentary and editorial) as well. So far, most scholars have focused on the studies of the stylistic features of news reports in national and comprehensive newspapers, however, none of them lays stress on the researches of the stylistic features based on the studies of the functional CDA of English and Chinese FCs in local newspapers. This thesis will be a new attempt in this field. That is the very reason why the author chooses the CDA on the stylistic features of English and Chinese FCs as the objective of this thesis.Since the research explores the unexplored area of the studies of CDA and news styles, the aim of this thesis is to lay a foundation for further researches of the same kind in the future. The author hopes that the thesis can be a further application of SFG to English and Chinese FCs and that the findings of the research can be of use to those who want to seek the common stylistic features of English and Chinese FCs. In this way, the cognition of the stylistic features of English and Chinese news discourses can be deepened, which might also be beneficial to the writings of English and Chinese football commentaries and translation between them, as well as the teaching and researches on CDA.
