Based on theories of Systemic Functional Grammar, this thesis examines the poem Yue Ye (Moonlit Night) by Du Fu, a Chinese poet of Tang Dynasty, and its English translations, to provide a better perception and appreciation of the texts. It also intends to explore the application of Systemic Functional Grammar in poetic discourse analysis and to disclose its enlightenment to translation studies. This paper consists of four chapters. The first chapter presents an introduction to the aim, method and the corpus of this research. The second chapter is a review of the framework of Systemic Functional Grammar and its significance in discourse analysis. The third chapter compares and contrasts the Chinese text with the English texts, focusing on the transitivity system, mood system and cohesion and thematic structure. The last chapter concludes the main findings of this research, with a view to offer insight to translation studies.
