It has become a common view that the goal of foreign language teaching is to cultivate students' intercultural communicative competence. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to teach culture during the process of language teaching. Culture can be reflected at the phonemic, lexical, syntactic and discourse levels of language. This thesis only takes up culturally loaded words at the lexical level, for from social use of language, cultural distinctions are most prominent and widespread at this level. It is important to learn the associative meanings as well as the designative meanings of culturally loaded words, but this is not enough for learning language and culture. We need to make further studies of the deep-level cultural differences reflected in culturally loaded words and look into the factors affecting these differences in the hope that we can know more about the people of the language, their behavior norms, values and beliefs, ways of thinking. Therefore it is really essential to find effective ways to teach culturally loaded words in foreign language teaching. In the thesis, the author puts forward five methods on the basis of teaching practice in vocational college and gives some examples to illustrate how to teach culturally loaded words with these methods. In order to prove the necessity of teaching culturally loaded words in vocational college and evaluate the effectiveness of these methods, an experiment has been made in two groups of non-English majors. The results indicate that it is necessary to teach culturally loaded words and these methods are effective in vocational college Englishteaching. Teaching culturally loaded words can arouse students' interest in learning English and Western culture and is helpful to develop their intercultural communicative competence.
