The Study On Modern Chinese Parenthesis

The parenthesis, which remains using in speech communication as a pragmatics element, so it's an unimportant field on Chinese grammar study always. But because it has a special place in synatx, exploring the value of the parenthesis will further comprehend such grammar phenomena as the parenthesis. In this paper, we comprehensively study the situation of using parenthesis in Chinese, and disscuse the reason what makes the parenthesis emerge with the viewpoint of relevance theory. Finally, in order to prove our point, we analyze the different usage of Chinese parenthesis in different styles of language. The main contents include:Firstly, the parenthesis classifies. For many years, there are many standards in classifying the parenthesis, such as, the function, the position and the semantic. From studying, we regard the supplement as the parenthesis'metafunction. Because the supplement function needs the special positions to show it's function. The position becomes the best standard naturally. On this point, the middle and the end in a sentence are the first level; the first place in a sentence is the second level. We can divide parentheses into two sorts, the pure parenthesis and the expanding parenthesis.Secondly, analyzing the reason of the parenthesis'coming up with the view of relevance theory. We can make a good answer within the theoretical framework of relevance theory proposed by D. Sperber and D. Wilson. People obey a general rules when communicating -- Relevance Principle. It means that subject needs to offer relevant message when communicating, so the object can understand what he means, and the parenthesis is the right method; On the other hand, the communicative object catches the meaning with the help of parenthesis.Finally, we prove the theory by statistics. From the tendency of the usage of parenthesis in different styles, we can find that expressive parenthesis take the biggest proportion in spoken language, but connective parenthesis is more in written language. When communicating the subject not only speaking but he also need the object to understand and respond, so he must express himself correctly and clearly. So the expressive parenthesis becomes very important. But written language need semantic is careful and structure is logical. Naturally the connective parenthesis can manifest it's advantage.
