| This thesis is a translation practice report,and the original text translated is The French Enlightenment and the Emergence of Modern Cynicism（excerpts）,which focuses on the methods of English-Chinese translation of parentheses in philosophical texts.Since there are many parentheses in the selected translation materials,and the translation of these parentheses becomes a problem that has to be solved in the translation process,the author takes English parenthesis translation as the research topic of this report.The parenthesis is a common linguistic phenomenon in English,which exists independently of the core components of a sentence,seemingly insignificant,but with important communicative and rhetorical functions.Although scholars have done a number of researches on this field of parenthesis,most of which focus on its classification and definition.The translation strategy of parenthesis is worthy of further exploration.This report adopts case study to analyze the parentheses in the text in terms of the differences between English and Chinese parentheses and the guiding principles of translation.Based on the translation strategies proposed by domestic scholars Zheng Shengtao and Bao Yan on the Chinese translation of English parentheses,the translator summarizes the specific techniques for translating parentheses,including retaining the original form,splitting,inversion,restructuring,embedding and using brackets.Guided by the cohesion and coherence theory,the translator discusses the corresponding translation strategies for parentheses in different situations,hoping to provide some more feasible translation techniques.The study of the translation of the selected text not only deepens the author’s knowledge of the philosophical text,but also familiarizes her with the rational application of the English and Chinese languages in terms of linguistic structure,so that she can flexibly use translation methods and the rules of conversion between the English and Chinese languages to translate the parenthesis and convey the message of the philosophical text without changing the meaning of the original text. |
