Magic Realism In Song Of Solomon

Song of Solomon (1977) is one of the most prominent novels of famous Afro-American woman writer Toni Morrison in twentieth century. Once published, Song of Solomon sparkles and sparks in American literary world. And the author believes that the emotional wallop of the novel in some way due to the application of magic realism. And this feature, which few people set foot in home and abroad, is very attractive and worth researching. This thesis thus studies the magic realism in Song of Solomon.Derived from Latin America, magic realism briefly has three principles: first, it is the amalgam of magic and realism. Second, it utilizes mythological archetypes. Third, it employs literalization. These principles combine closely with the novel and form the writing characteristic from three levels. This thesis aims at studying this writing feature. It can be divided into three parts. The first part deals with the amalgam of magic elements and realistic elements in the novel. The second part handles with the mythological archetypes shown in the novel. The third part is about the employment of literalization in the novel.In all, the limited analysis of magic realism in this novel can not exhaust the novel's charm. But through analyzing, the life and position of black people in modern society are fully shown and the neglected history and culture find their places, through which Morrison warns the modern black people that if they want to achieve both physical and psychological freedom, they should on one hand envisage the history and draw a lesson from it, on the other hand root in black tradition and culture and resist the cultural oppression and thus preserve their own identities and redeem thefuture.
