Since the advent of the series Harry Potter, as a strong tropical storm, the potentialcannot be taken lightly. Rowling doesn’t have many works but only for these serialbooks are enough to find herself as the only woman among British Forbes list. Her serialnovels are based on the reality and use the magic as its mask, inherit and carry forwardthe various modern and post-modern writing techniques.The novel stayed in the best sellers’list,its potential readers are children, because ofthis novel facilitate the classic fairy tale and modern literary genre Magic Realism fusiontogether, these two distinctive items crash into dazzling sparks.Harry Potter belongs to the children’s literary works, the readers are likely to defineit a fairy-tale story. Ancient fairy tales were intended for an audience of adults, but astopics to tramp and farmers at their leisure, Grimm brothers condensed and narrowed thethemes of violence, incest and so forth, to the nowadays’ genre of form of fairy tales. Asearly as19thcentury, fairy takes gradually became to a form of children’s literature andwon world-wide recognition. By contrast, magic realism is a new literary genre,appearedin the1950s originally from Latin America. Then this literary genre sweep Europe andthe United States, admired by some writers of modern times. Exposing the modern worldsocial problems in supernatural and fantasy forms, magic realistic writers are able toreveal their social and political ideals.This thesis based on Magic Realism characteristics and fairy tale archetypes,through the mythological archetypes, the narrative techniques, allusions to social realityand so forth, above this, to make this paper specific and convincing in its unique artisticwriting charm and social significance.The thesis is composed of three parts, the introduction, the main body and theconclusion.The Introduction part provides a brief and clear introduction to J. K. Rowling andher masterpiece Harry Potter series, a literature review of this serial novel at home andabroad, and the theoretical foundation of magic realism.Chapter One explores the development of magic realism. Magic Realism with itsunstoppable trend from the Latin American continent swept all the way across the PacificOcean and then rested in Europe and Asia. Magic Realism represents reality by the means of mysterious techniques, but its ultimate objective is to show the real life.Rowling’ work has a distinctive feature in this fairy tale style. The first audiences are nottoday’s children, but those adults to kill time. Fairy tale becomes its standard examplesby the deletion of Grimm brothers.Chapter Two analyzes the characteristics of Magic Realism in these serial books andthe unique fairy-tale version. The hero Harry Potter who is an Ugly Duckling prototype isbased on a unique Fairy-tale version. Rowling successfully created an ordinary orphanfrom nobody to somebody, a great heroic image. The war between the justice and evilrepresented by Dumbledore and Voldemort construct the whole books, their final combatare classic examples of fairy tales. Magic Realism novel are good at using the applicationof unique narrative strategies, namely ambiguous narrative of the life and death,conversion of time and space, etc. Magic realistic works adopt Jungian archetypal theoryto analyze the novel mythological archetypes, meanwhile to perform the Magic Realismcharacteristics.Chapter Three reveals the social issues which are hinted in Harry Potter series, andthis is the prominent feature in Magic Realism works. The work is concerned with thehierarchy of the Ministry of Magic and money first Gringotts, racial discrimination andgender discrimination. Harry and Voldemort have the similar living environment butleading both different characters, among this, the choice in which plays a very importantrole. Rowling pays close attention to the social issues, in her serial books, she spent morewords to elucidate the real world to allude to social reality by the suitable writing strategyof magic realism.The Conclusion reviews the whole thesis briefly. Harry Potter is a landmark work,however, it comes into being lately, literary critics about these series can be counted onfingers, for this reason, the reference and research about them are few. This thesis justcovers a few pieces of the series, be impossible to avoid omissions. The ideas andarguments in the thesis are far from enough to make a well-founded demonstration. Thewriter hopes to start a discussion about these serial books and for later readers providingwith a new perspective and research direction.
