At present, translation research has been done prosperously and people start their studies from various aspects and make some inspiring achievements. Now, western translation studies have turned to be a subject with multi-variant trends, interdependence and interaction of various translation approaches and subjects, and as a matter of fact, translation study has turned into a interdisciplinary research. Unfortunately, translation teaching, closely related to translation study, develops very slowly, which is indicated by both the number of papers published in various foreign language journals and the depth and range of the research of papers. There are many reasons for it and this paper, based on the two pairs of conceptions — translation competence and translator competence, teaching translation and translation teaching, tries to discuss the principal and subordinate relationship between translation competence and translator competence in translation teaching.The preface mainly focuses on research background, research objectives, research hypotheses and research methods. The second chapter aims to target on such questions as what translation competence is, what translator competence is and what the similarities and difference between translation competence and translator competence are. The situation of teaching translation and translation teaching will go to chapter three, which gives attentions to the situations and characteristics of teaching translation and translation teaching and further exploration of the relationship between translation competence and translator competence in teaching translation. Chapter four presents us with discussion of the two pairs of conceptions— teaching translation and translation teaching, translation competence and translator competence, in particular the debate on the principal and subordinate relationship between translation competence and translator competence in translation teaching.
