A Study Of The English Translation Of Neologisms Originating From Recent Chinese Culture

A bottom-up approach is adopted in the study, which stars from the micro analysis of data and ends with a general summary of translation principles, the pattern of meaning conveyance and relevant translation methods. The thesis, based on a qualitative method, conducts empirical study into the translations of some neologisms originating from recent Chinese culture (called Neologisms in the thesis) with the aid of some theoretical tools, which are culture-related and semantics-related concepts. Data are classified from different angles into three major sets—cultural dimension, structural dimension, and meaning dimension—and again be subcategorized. For each subcategory, typical or controversial examples are selected from the collection for analysis. On one hand, the study suggests an appropriate English version(s) for each Neologism under discussion by comparing and illustrating its different English versions in terms of denotation and connotation etc; on the other hand, the analysis part also offers translation techniques for certain types of Neologisms. Finally, the study proposes some general principles and methods for the translation of Neologisms etc, among which are the principle of maximum accuracy and the principle of maximum economy.
