The development of Chinese modern metropolis has made the styles of metropolitan novels diverse and complex. In this thesis, I reviewed the hai-genre metropolis novels in the literature history. From latitude to longitude, from "the experience of streets" to "the experience of rooms", I made research on the hai-genre metropolis literature, which was represented by novels of "New-feeling genre" and Zhang Ai-Ling. What is more, in order to get some experiences that can be utilized by contemporary metropolitan literature, I analyzed the citizens' world that is developing from "novelty" to "legendary".The thesis is made of three parts. In the first part, I introduced the urbanization of Shanghai. By analyzing the difference between the traditional citizens and the modern citizens. I explained the inheritance and the breakthrough of the metropolis and the modern citizens compared with the tradition. I also discerned the hai-genre' origins, to provide convenience to the latter part of the thesis. In the second part, by explaining "the experience of streets", "the image of women", and "the family of metropolis", the "novel" metropolis citizens' world of the new-feeling genre was displayed in the logical order. I focused on its novelty when I realized its inadequacies. In the third part, by explaining "the experience of rooms", "the fable style narrative", and "the instantaneous sobriety", the "legendary" metropolis citizens' world of Zhang Ai-Ling was displayed in the logical order. I put the emphasis on the significance of Zhang Ai-Iing's breakthrough and advantages.
