Since the forties of the 20th century, Zhang Ai-ling have published her Romance, she and her novels have had ups and downs for more than 60 years in China. In the forties, Zhang Ai-ling appeared suddenly and became the most famous writer in Shanghai. In the fifties, she resolutely left china so she was forgotten by academic circles and readers for many years, her influence was only restricted in Hong Kong and Taiwan. In the eighties she was well-known again in the land of China, inducing new fever for Zhang Ai-ling. Her novels have been popular among the readers. All of the factors above lead to an interesting "Zhang Ai-ling's phenomenon".The occurrence of "Zhang Ai-ling's phenomenon" relates to not only her own legend experience and the change of social environment in china for more than half century, but also the development, character of modern literature, transition of spirit in Modem Chinese Literature. "Zhang Ai-ling's phenomenon" reflects some noticeable and meaningful problems in the history of Modern Chinese Literature like a mirror.As for Zhang Ai-ling's own creation, she inherited the tradition of feminine writing since "May 4th Movement" ,she penetrated the spiritual hurt of female and wrote the truth of urban women's spiritual world and revealed the real feminine survival and the psychology which is camouflaged by the masculine words, she opened new direction of the feminine criticism writing. On the other hand, she developed the tradition of "May 4th Movement " the time which noticed individual and Shanghai-school fiction which focused on feminine and the daily life narrative. It was family life and housewives that she described. She deserted the excessive intervention of political ideology to literature and the writing pattern. She persisted in the standpoint of feminine writing which was tracked down by many feminine writers since "May 4th Movement". She developed her own esthetic style and established the desolate esthetic and the writing concept. She created unique Zhang's narration of modern literature of China and became model for descendants to imitate.
