Generally speaking, the living standard of rural families is affected by many factors, including institutions, surrounding, customs, and economy that is the topic of this paper. In the aspect of academe, no definite meaning has been given to economy factors. I think it should be a conception with wide range. It refers not only to the economy actions and conceptions of a concrete people or a crowd, but also to an abstract institution, such as a market system. Besides, it means the relations between two economic entities like the integration of suburb and rural areas. Even the conceptions of labor force, resources, techniques, life of peasants are also included in the economy factors. The paper analyses the life of Shanghai suburban families in the first half of 20th century through three closely related aspects: agriculture, handicraft industry and working in rural areas. The paper doesn't aim at view creation, but at analyses and carding of individual cases. Actually, the paper tells about the development of economy in Shanghai suburban areas and concludes reasonable thinking of economy factors. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part discusses the development of agriculture, the main factor that affects the life of suburban families. With the rise of needs in Shanghai rural markets, the agriculture started modernization. The planting structure adjusted and the field of production enlarged. Some suburban families got profits from growing the economic plants. At the same time, the enlargement of production fields also created more sources for peasants' income. It was this agriculture development that made suburban families maintain stable lives. The second part analyses the reason by describing the development of handicraft industry. In the early 20th century, Chinese traditional economy model became decomposed in the effects of western countries with capital economy. The process directly leaded to the decline of textile industry, the most important family handicraft industry of Chinese traditional peasants, and made Chinese countries became poor.
