On Functional Equivalence Achieving In Literature Translation In The Light Of Context Of Situation

The current situation of literature translation is not satisfactory. We have many versions of foreign works. However, many of them are too rough and readers cannot enjoy their reading. This is a tough problem. Taking this as the starting point, the author, by appealing to theory of context of situation suggested by Halliday and functional equivalence by Nida, this paper focuses on the discussion of how to achieve functional equivalence in literature translation through faithful representation of the context of situation of the source text. By means of discussing the relationship between context of situation and functional equivalence, this paper first works out some principles for functional equivalence achieving in light of context of situation. Then, special attention has been given to the discussion of how to achieve functional equivalence by faithful representation of the field and mode of the source text. Our discussion is illustrated by two Chinese versions of Pride and Prejudice, respectively translated by Sun zhili and Wang Keyi.The paper consists of seven chapters.The first chapter focuses on the discussion of term discrimination: sentence, utterance, context, coherence and situation. Special attention has been directed to the discussion of theory of context of situation, including its history of development, its three variables and the relationship between coherence and context of situation. All of these lead to a conclusion: context of situation is essential to the coherence of a text and it should be analyzed though language expressions.Chapter two mainly talks about the relationship between context of situation and functional equivalence in literature translation. It starts from the discussion of the intention of utterance and situation. Then we argue that functional equivalence in literature translation can be achieved by the faithful representation of context of situation of the source text.
