Modern Chinese Compact Sentence (call it CS in short as follows)is one of special patterns in Modern Chinese Grammar. In the traditional research on the CS, the scholars only distinguished simple sentences from complex sentences, especially being depended on the studying of complex sentence. The people who are studying Modern Chinese Grammar do not agree with each other on how the CS does belong to and what its nature is. The author thinks it is a transitional pattern. On the basis of the achievements in scientific research done by those former scholars, the author analysis the characters and items of CS from the following four parts.In the foreword, the article summarizes the research history of CS, and defines that CS is a transitional sentence pattern in process of translation from complex sentence to simple one.Firstly, the article talks about CS/ characters and defines its limits. Thus it is pointed out that the CS is different from the serial verbal sentence, double constituents, as well as those ones that make the pattern of subject and predicate as the object of the sentence.Secondly, the article makes a syntactic classification to CS on the syntax level, and points out the value of syntactic order in CS. Then the author analyses its hierarchical structure. On the semantic level, the article mainly studies a lot of logical relation that expressed by the CS logical meaning. At last, concerning the verbal phrases,the two parts of a CS must suit for each other, and not all the verbs can form a compact structure.
