This dissertation argues that the valid object of pragmastylistic analysis can be filmic text. The filmic text conveys implied meanings which go beyond the literal meanings of the words the characters speak, and the model of analysis should be one which can account for these implied meanings. Pragmastylistics, as a new interdisciplinary, which is described as a stylistic study of language- in-use, can be available for the analysis of the filmic text. The analysis on the interpersonal relationship in filmic text on both the micro-level and the macro-level may more profoundly reveal the image of the characters, their social status, and it may also help reveal more about the theme of the films from a dynamic perspective.A pragmastylistic approach can apply the pragmatic insights and explanations to filmic texts so as to examine the internal relationships between characters as well as the characters' individual speaking style and their intentions.The pragmatic theories such as relevance, speech act theory, PP and CP, presupposition and deixis, pragmatic ambivalence and conversational strategies can be used to analyze the dialogue in the filmic text, since these theories can indicate the interaction of the dialogue. The analysis with this theoretic framework reveals the characters' hidden motivation, the implied meaning of their utterances as well as their characterization.With the case study on Cold Mountain made within the same theoretic framework, the author analyzes the interpersonal relationship between the characters and their characteristics and points out that the macro-level hearer, i.e. the reader of the filmic text can be aware of the implied meaning of the dialogue even if the micro-level hearer, i.e. the characters can't.The dissertation makes an effort to testify the pragmastylistic study of filmic texts cannot only achieve descriptive adequacy, but also explanatory...
