From a sociolinguistic perspective, language and culture are inseparable and interdependent for language is not only a part of culture but also the vehicle of culture as well as a means of communication. Competence in language use is determined not only by the ability to use language with grammatical accuracy, but also to use language appropriate to particular contexts. Thus, successful language learning requires language users to know the culture that underlies language.Words, as the core of language, are the most basically elements of language. Since language and culture are inseparable, words and culture are also inseparable.According to the recent researches on cross-cultural communication and vocabulary teaching, this paper points out the, necessity to implement the teaching of culture into vocabulary teaching. The result of such a combination is the teaching of words' cultural meanings, which can be taught through contrastive analysis. On the basis of linguistic theories, the writer points out the necessity of teaching the English words' culture and suggests some methods of integrating the teaching of its cultural connotation into College English teaching.
