The Effects Of Field Independence/Field Dependence On Reading Comprehension Test

Cognitive style is a term used to refer to the manner in which people perceive, conceptualize, organize and recall information.Field independence / dependence which introduced by American famous psychologist Witkin had great important meaning and has become the hot issue in linguistics research. Reading plays an important role in English teaching and learning. This thesis proves three hypotheses through analyzing the relationship between field independence / dependence and reading comprehension test. These three hypotheses are:1. The field independent Chinese EFL test-takers generally perform better than field-dependent ones on English reading comprehension test.2. Sex difference does not directly affect reading test performance.3. The degree of the influence imposed by FID on reading comprehension test performance differs across different types of reading comprehension that are built on same passages.At last, according to the characteristics and division of FI/FD, teachers can adapt different kinds of methodologies orientating students' different cognitive styles.1.
