According to sociolinguistics, we know that English is commonly considered to be the Lingua Franca of the world. That means English is widely spoken by people in different parts of the world on different occasions, such as an international conference or a private conversation. Journalist English, one of the varieties of written English used by the press, possesses its unique characteristics, which are commonly acknowledged and studied by many people like other linguistic phenomena. English is experiencing constant changes and developments as society advances. Compared with decades ago, Modern English has been largely widened in its usage. All changes and new things brought by the society's advancement are best represented in mass media including newspapers, magazines, TV, radios, etc. So the study of news English is necessary not only to journalists but to the English learners. Crystal & Davy in Investigating English Styles (1969) said "Any use of language displays certain characteristics which allow it to be identified with one or more extra-linguistic contexts." Many scholars studied media English and acknowledged its unique characteristics. Actually, newspapers, TV and radio have their own styles in forming part of a general journalistic pattern, which we may loosely classify as "News English". Therefore, it is hard to fully understand the message of media English on various media without mastering basic conventions.Based on this point, this thesis is devoted to a systematic study of news English.
