George Orwell is a world-famous English writer in the twentieth century. His fame has been established mostly by his two political fables: Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. The latter one is his masterpiece, in which he described a nightmare world where extremely brutal and ruthless oppression of humanity is carried out by an imagined totalitarian regime. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze Orwell's version of various aspects of humanity as represented in Nineteen Eighty-Four in an attempt to illustrate his criticism on totalitarianism and all the other inhumane regimes that oppress welfare and free development of human beings. In Nineteen Eighty-Four Orwell dealt with the problem of humanity mainly in three aspects: first, freedom, including freedom of action and of thinking; second, equality between human beings, particularly demonstrating the long history of class distinction of human society; third, decent private lives of human beings: at this point he stressed on interpersonal relationships, through the protagonist Winston's love with Julia, his recollection of his mother's love, and his relationships with his colleagues and neighbors. In general, Orwell, through this novel, showed us the huge damage despotism did to people's normal lives.As a prolific writer, Orwell wrote several novels, a reportage, and a huge amount of essays (of which numerous are political essays) in his life time.
