The present thesis is intended to make a comparative study of Lu Xun's and Liang Shiqiu's translation activities on the basis of the skopos theory. Both Lu Xun and Liang Shiqiu are important translators of China. Studies have been made of them. Different from the traditional translation studies, the present thesis is not intended to make an evaluative study of their translation skills and techniques or to make a judgment of who is the winner in their famous translation debate. On the contrary, it tries to investigate their different translation skopoi in that particular period of China and to find out how their different skopoi influenced their choices of literary works to translate and their different translation strategies in the translating process.This thesis is based on the skopos theory of Hans Vermeer who held that all human actions were purpose-determined. Different translators at different periods certainly have different purposes in translating. In turn different purposes of different translators will to a large extent determine translators' different translation selection and also different translation strategies. By employing different translating strategies, both Liang Shiqiu and Lu Xun sought to achieve their own translation purposes. Lu Xun wanted to set the readers free from the imprecise and sloppy Chinese at his time.
