The study of group phenomena in interpersonal relationship is the hot issue that is paid special attention to by sociologists, linguists, psychologists, and other scholars in recent several decades of years. A comprehensive recognition of this field has been given to us by their exploration in different perspectives and levels. The writer adopts a social psychological approach, which puts more emphasis on solving the potential problems in intercultural communication and providing immediate practical concern. The writer claim that group antagonism exists in the process of intercultural contact widespread and exerts influences on intercultural communication to great extent .The author of this thesis concludes that: stereotypes and prejudice strongly influence the individual's attitudes and behavior in a variety of areas because of the existence of group antagonism.Main contents can be summarized as thus:The first part involves the intercultural communication theoretical foundation. Culture, here, is regarded as a unified system of three layers including attitude, behavior and materials from the interior to the outside. Individual cultural acquisition and development are shaped by both the real environment and the virtual environment. The process of intercultural communication includes eight ingredients horizontally and cultural context, situational context, etc. Sociocultural theories and cognitive theories have been cited for latter analysis.The second part deals with the classification of groups. It declares the definition of group, and some concepts and ideas related to group, such as the features of group, the psychological function of group, the definitions of in-group and out-group, the difference between out-groups and strangers, etc.The third part deals with elements for the arising of group antagonism. It is exhibited when members of one group, called the in-group, display negative attitudes and behavior toward members of another group, called out-group.
