As we all know second language learning (SLL) is a complicated process, which involves lots of internal factors and external factors, such as age, sex, personality, learning environment, learning style, cognitive strategies, attitude, and motivation, etc. This thesis concentrates on the personality traits, to study the importance of personality on SLL. Along with the developments of psychology and its progressive interactions with language researches, the personality has drawn much more attentions, and meanwhile some the psychological research methods and latest research results are applied to the SLA researches.Though lots of researchers begin to realize this important factor in SLA, the researches on personality are still incomprehensive and demand for more investigations. First, the personality connotations and classifications are proposed differently by different psychologists and researchers, which also evoke their much interests and initiative to make further explorations. However, the main personality traits: introversion/extroversion and anxiety have been generally accepted. Second, considering the connections between traits and achievements differ in different disciplines, the relationship in Foreign Language Research has been studied. In SLL researches, whether personality factors have significant correlation with the language proficiency is still a question, left some space for explorations.In the literature review, it is found that the roles of extroversion/introversion and anxiety are still controversial both in China and in abroad. In some researches, these traits play positive role on the SLL outcomes, especially on some certain skill, but some other researches find that it is not identical in different contexts.
