News is indispensable to people's life nowadays. Every day we can get news from different media around us, newspaper, radio, TV and Internet, among which the newspaper has the longest history and sets foundation of news reporting. Reading newspaper, we have to deal with all kinds of articles, such as news, editorials, features and advertisements, among which the amount of news occupies more than half of the page space. In this thesis, the author makes a thorough analysis of the stylistic characteristics of the three main parts of the news, namely, headline, lead and body. What's more, the English-Chinese translation of news is also dealt with based on the application of the characteristics.An American famous journalist Professor Arason James said something to the effect of when modern newspaper crosses the border of a country or region and becomes the public opinion of the world, the event of a country will have a great effect on the other countries. In such a world with quick development of new media, newspaper is by no means inferior to any other media, but spreads the news information to every corner of the globe with its distinguished features.There is no fixed definition of "news", but experts agree a lot with each other in the aspect of six news determinants for discussing what is news. With the discussion in this area, the thesis focuses respectively on the basic components of news. News headline is the most eye-catching part with its distinguished formation, vocabulary, tense,voice, punctuation and the figure of speech.
