Hong Yan, who lived in the period when the Northern Song Dynasty was changing into the Southern Song Dynasty, is an important earlier poet of the school of Jiangxi poetry. His poems are characterized both by the times and the school, and by their distinctness and uniqueness. The records about Hong Yan'life can be found only in the predecessors'notes on poets and poetry, and most of them are oddments, recording things simply in content or saying things differently. Therefore, the author has done some textual research, mainly including:1.the year of his birth and death; 2.his family and life experience. 3.his doing scholarly research and making friends. 4. his passing the imperial examination and the official career. There are not many Hong Yan's poems existing, only one hundred and ten odd, most of which exist in his The Collection of Poems, Xidu. At the moment, the author can find five editions of The Collection of Poems of Xidu and briefly explained these five editions in the thesis. The attention which the predecessors paid to Hong Yan's poems is not quite enough. There are not much comments on his poems and they are not systematic. The author has done a comprehensive and objective research into Hong Yan's poetry on the basis of predecessors'work. In the artistic characteristics of the poetry, as a poet of the school of Jiangxi poetry, Hong Yan was provided with both the times'generality and his personal characteristics. The use of literary quotation reflects the common features of the school of Jiangxi poetry. Double artistic conception by which Hong Yan constructed his poems is a distinct artistic feature of his personal poems. The Lüshi (a regulated verse) predominates in Hong Yan's poetry, accounting for more than 70 percent, and sounding vigorously and connecting a set of poems under one topic are their two distinct features. The author hopes to make the readers understand from the poem aspect the emotions of Hong Yan for the reality in the turbulent society by a comprehensive and objective research into his...
