As a significant cultural activity in which ancient Chinese scholars worshiped masters and communicated academic thoughts, covering a long distance, SAFH played a profoundly vital and influential role in Chinese history. It came into being from the Spring and Autumn Period to the Warring States Period, an unstable age, when religious and legal hierarchy, based on sibship in the Dynasties of Xia, Shang, and West Zhou, were subjected to collapse, meanwhile aristocratic stratum started to degrade and disintegrate. During that course, scholars, who used to be at the bottom of the nobility, dissociated and became traveling scholars with no duty and financial sources. At the same time, state—owned schools declined; however, private schools sprung up and cooperated with traveling scholars, which gave rise to SAFH. This phenomenon started to enjoy popularity and prosperity, because well—cultivated people and parasitic guests were welcomed in society, and common people were thirsty for knowledge.
