Ge Hong (283-343), styled Zhi Chuan, from Jurong,Danyang, was an eminent theorist of Taoism and of Traditional Chinese Medicine; meanwhile he was a outstanding statesman and thinker. Bao Pu Zi was his masterpiece, reflecting his thoughts most. Our country's academic circles focus their studies on his important contribution to and historical achievement of History of Taoism and History of Natural Science, etc, whereas they ignore necessary exploration of his other academic thoughts like those of political philosophy and administrative philosophy reflected in the wide discussion of social problems in history and in reality in Bao Pu Zi. As to the monograph study, most scholars only focus on Bao Pu Zi Nei Pian, paying scanty attention to Bao Pu Zi Wai Pian. Thus it's very difficult to make a comparatively impartial and comprehensive evaluation of his status in the cultural history. This study status-quo not only stimulates our interest in further studying Ge Hong's thoughts, but also leaves us adequate study space. After a long time of data collection, classification and discrimination, applying the sociology and political sciences methodology and perspective, we finally determine to make a comprehensive analysis of Ge Hong's Bao Pu Zi Nei Pian and Bao Pu Zi Wai Pian altogether, based on which we'll study Ge Hong's pursuit of social ideal and life realm in order to explore the thoughts of political philosophy and administrative philosophy reflected in Ge Hong's construction of operational mode of society, and in the mean time, to manage to re-evaluate his status in political and cultural history.Ge Hong's construction of operational mode of society, roughly equal to a "systematic" exploring process, embodies comparatively profound content. In the process of theoretical construction, he formulated his comparatively comprehensive theory with the prerequisite as the exposition and criticism of social facts that "the morality declines and the rule collapses; the customs are depraved and the enlightenment deteriorates", with the purpose as the realization of "social reorganization", with the content as social establishment, and with means as the social control.
