Reading is a psychological process in which people extract meaning from the printed or written language symbols. Reading is also a basic technique and the prerequisite of making achievement in learning. It is the assembling of a series of processes 'and actions. The key of reading comprehension lies in logical thought. There exists difference between English mode of thinking and Chinese mode of thinking. The differences, to a certain extent, affect Chinese students' reading comprehension. Therefore, it is necessary to differences between English mode of thinking and Chinese mode of thinking in order to find efficient ways of improving Chinese students' reading comprehension. This thesis is divided into three chapters: the relations between language, thought and reading comprehension are presented in the first chapter; the second chapter traces back philosophical background contributing to differences between Chinese mode of thinking and English mode of thinking and compares the differences which are embodied in their respective language. The third chapter first tells what causes difficulty of Chinese students' English reading, and then analyzes some other factors relating to Chinese Students' reading comprehension. In a word, the study of differences in thought patterns between English and Chinese is sure to promote the studies of English reading in China and in turn gives some efficient ways to improve Chinese Students' reading comprehension.
