Erya, one of the Confucian classics, plays an important role in the history of scholarship and culture in China. The past and present works on Erya study remain in abundance, among which is Xing Bing's Erya Shu (Erya Commentary), the commentary works as the product of his research on Erya. His Erya Shu is not only important in the history of the Erya studies but also valuable in the study of Confucian classics, the study of historical literature, philology and culture.It is regrettable to note that most of the later comments on Xing Bing's Erya Shu turned out to be sectarian views. Among more recent scholars, Wang Kan was the only one who viewed the book objectively. These unjust comments and evaluations exerted profound and far-reaching influence even till today.In order to provide an objective evaluation of Xing Bing's Erya Shu, to give a true picture of Erya study as it is and to impel further Erya study of the Song Dynasty, we attempt this restudy of Xing Bing's Erya Shu on the basis of the previous researches.This paper consists of six parts.
