Listening, the most frequently used language skill, plays a significant role in daily communication and educational process. In spite of its importance, listening ability development has received only slight emphasis in language instruction. Nevertheless, comprehensive listening serves as a primary channel for learning. It is therefore, important for ESL programs to prepare students for successful listening. The fundamental purpose of this thesis is to explore the ways of adopting a communicative-based interactive listening teaching method (ILT). The problem of traditional listening teaching in Shanghai University has been lingering in the mind of the author for years. She tries to work out the possibility of improving listening teaching with a new advanced approach--ILT.ILT is mainly targeted at creating a highly interactive listening environment, during which listeners have maximum interaction not only with listening texts but also with peers and teachers. Inspired by the successful implementation of ILT in the classes at Sydney Institute of language and Commerce (SILC), the researcher intends to adopt it to her sophomore students. The data collected in this research mainly comes from classroom observation and interviews. The researcher provides a detailed analysis and discussion which concentrates on listening materials, listening activities, seat arrangement, skill integration and extra-curriculum activities. The paper also describes some favorable and unfavorable listening teaching situations in her own context. The researcher finally comes to a positive conclusion that ILT can be effectively adopted in her classes in Shanghai University with further development on language learning/teaching environment and methodology, together with her continuous efforts in listening area.
