The forming of one country ' s foreign policy is inevitably influenced by her country ' s culture——especially her political culture. The idealist tradition in U.S. diplomacy is deeply rooted in the idea of Mission, originating from Puritanism, American national identity and the confidence in their political system. The idea of Mission is a main component of American ' s ideology and shapes the way they deal with international issues. This idealism character, with different significance in different historical period, is typically expressed in the diplomatic practice of U.S.After the Cold War, the United States has become the sole superpower. Idealism in U.S. foreign policy increasingly occupies a dominant place by means of "exporting democracy", "human rights diplomacy" and "carrying out a new interventionism". Although the United States takes deferent forms, the fundamental purpose implementing foreign policy idealism is to pursue U.S. own national interests.The thesis is divided into four parts with the logical framework—foreword, text, conclusion and references.The forward gives an introduction of the research condition of "idealism" at home and abroad, also of the problems expected to be studied and adopted methods in this paper. The text is divided into four chapters. The first chapter starts from American unique cultural perspectives, analyzing the courses of "idealism". The second chapter presents the development of idealism and American diplomatic tradition in three periods. The third chapter narrates the reasons of the upgrading of idealism and its practice after the cold war. The last chapter expounds that under "beautiful coat" of the idealism, the United States pursues its national interest to maximum and the expansion of its own values and power.The conclusion reveals the purpose and essence of idealism diplomacy. So we should correctly understand what the United States has done in the world.
