The book the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao is the most important work on ancient phonology written by scholar ChenDi who lived in Qing dynasty. It embodies all the author's thought on ancient phonology, also takes up an extremely important position in the history of our ancient phonology studies.Chen Di was the first one who raised the conception of times and regions in ancient phonology, which corrected the long-lasted anti-historism in ancient phonology tendency. He made people recognize that pronunciation is continually changing, that the pronunciation used today is different from the ancient one and the pronunciation in the South is different from that in North. This idea became deeding ideology on the ancient phonology research from Qing till today. The book the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao achieved enormously. Firstly, it formed a correct concept of times and regions in ancient phonology, the view of the original pronunciation in the Book of Songs .Secondly, Chen made great progress in archaeology. His book had sufficient well-arrangement materials and adopted Yi particularly thoroughly. He made his choices when made textual criticism on the versions predecessors; He used different ways to make textual criticism as well. Thirdly, the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao made certain contributions to the research of The Book of Songs .In his book, he researched 444 ancient tones of characters being in rhyme in the Book of Songs; he analsized the patterns of being in rhyme in the Book of Songs; he raised the view of the four tones being in rhyme separately. After the appearance of the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao, it gave a significant impact to the concept of ancient phonology and the research of it in Qing dynasty. The concept of times and regions in ancient phonology , the view of opposing homophonic rhyme and also the view of the original pronunciation in the Book of Songs occupied the main part of the field in the research of Qing dynasty ancient phonology .The ways, which he integrated the evidence in itself with circumstantial evidence and made use of the Chinese character component bearing pronunciation ,were well received by the scholars in Qing dynasty ;Chen's research fruits were helpful in the study of the ancient initial consonant of a Chinese syllable, the establishment of early category of simple or compound vocal of a Chinese syllable and the raise of the theory of transformation between Yin and Yang; There were plenty of people inclined to adopt his drafting pronunciation in Qing dynasty .Nevertheless, there were still some defects in the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao .Firstly, the conception of times and regions in ancient phonology were not carried on thoroughly. It manifested in the following aspects: 1.The ancient pronunciation was defined too broad in the time limit.2.He gave ready credence to HanYu's viewpoint on ancient pronunciation.3.He followed the pattern of people's viewpoint in Song dynasty and made inadequate textual research. 4. When pronunciation is drafted, it is influenced by the dialects. Secondly, Chen failed to use textual research properly.1. He relied too much on Chinese character component bearing pronunciation. 2 when he quoted explanation according to pronunciation, he didn't consider generally. 3. he didn't master the quality of a variant form of a Chinese character. 4. He was ignorant of the document of classified rhyme. Finally, his research for the Book of Songs was not satisfying: 1, ChenDi knew nothing of rhyme. 2. He misapprehended the rhyme of the Book of Songs. 3. He mistakenly treat different rhyme as one for same rhymes.4.There was no definite pronunciation in characters being in rhyme. Additionally, whether Chen had seen the former edit of GuangYun is unknown, and he mistakenly took GuangYun for Shengyueyun. On the whole, the achievement of the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao is superior to its defects, and the ancient phonologists have always been thinking highly of the theory, methods and the adopted materials of the ancient phonology research of Chen, and they have derived nutriment from them. The appearance of the Textual Research for Ancient Pronunciation in the Book of Songs Annotated by Mao began an era of research of ancient rhyme. Many defects in the book were the limit of times .The detours Chen had made enlighten the future generation, and lead them to the plain sailing of the ancient rhyme research favorably.
