Short-term memory research already seeps to each concrete research area. The development of music short-term memory ability receives music educators' and instrumental music researchers' continuous attention. By the real diagnosis way, this research probes into some important questions which exists in the music short-term memory, and provides the effective solution strategy.The present paper quotes massive known research results, describes the development path of non-music short-term memory, and displays the present research direction of music short-term memory which has introduced much music short-term memory research and some questions that aren't solved.Basing on study short-term memory theory, the author unifies the realistic music teaching situation and surveys to institution of higher learning music students' ability of music short-term memory. The survey dimension mainly involves four aspects: (1) the influence of memory strategy to music short-term memory, (2) the apperception of the big mode, the minor mode as well as the national mode, (3) the apperception of 2/4 pats, 3/4 pats, 4/4 pats as well as 6/8 pats, (4) the differences of short-term memory of different music major learners.The first experimental group and the second experimental group of this research is compounded by 04 levels students of performances major and 04 levels masters of musicology major who come form northwest normal university. Each is tried to complete the breadth duty of memory. The research had discovered that,a. The result of the second experimental group's music short-term memory which is better than the first experimental group's. This indicated that it is helpful to enhance music short-term memory effect by the memory strategy.b. The big mode result is higher than the small mode as well as the national mode in the 4th section, but three modes have no obvious difference in the overall memory result.c. The 4/4 overall result is slightly better than the other three kind of pats of 2/4, 3/4,4/4 as well as 6/8. But this difference isn't remarkable.d. From the first experimental group and the second experimental group's error rate statistical result, the 1st section and the 8th section error rate is lowest, error rate is higher in 5th, 6, 7 sections.e. The research demonstrated that, instrumental music major music short-term memory ability is strongest, next for music education theory major, the western music history major, the Chinese tradition music research major and the composing music theory s major, the vocal music specialized result is lowest.Basing on the survey obtained data, the author analyzed the limitation and the deficiency in this research, and discussed the existent question of music memory ability cultivation, and proposed opinion to the music memory development. At same time, elaborated own viewpoint for further study of music long-term memory—recite music score form memory question.
