Systemic Functional Linguistics has gained great distinction and influence in Linguistic field in the late 20th century. The leading figures of systemic functional school, M.A.K. Halliday, R.Hasan and other scholars have made a lot of analyses on literary text and further manifested their theories available. One kernel idea of Functional Grammar is the metafunction theory. Based on points of M.A.K. Halliday, language as a system of social semiotics, has three functions, the ideational, which means the experiential and logical one in our real world and in our mind and events, states, entities involved in them; the interpersonal function, which means we use language to interact with other people, to set up and keep relations with them, to affect their actions, to present one's ideas on things in the world, and to elicit or change theirs; while the textual function, which refers to the language in using, we arrange our messages in ways which indicate how they fit in with other messages around them and with the wider context in which we are talking and writing."Based on the social semiotics and cognition theory of SFL, the paper intends to probe into literal text focuses on Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants and analyzes how the writer's iceberg style is embodied in the terse language and how the style presents the internal relation between writer's language and his thoughts. It is known that most of the previous and current researchers have analyzed the works of Hemingway from the different aspects, literary stylistics, literary criticism and linguistics theories. This paper aims at establishing the semantic inter connection between the characters of language and the writer's thinking features. Based on the social semiotics and cognitive approach, the paper applies the evidences on how to realize writer's style and the operative theory of systemic functional linguistics on the analysis of literary discourse.The first chapter gives a general survey of the past and present research on discourse analysis and the value of the paper. In this chapter, the paper reviews some scholars' analyses and studies in the discourses and tries to present the connection between the writer's unique linguistic style and his thoughts features on the basis of the social semiotics and cognition. And the significance of the subject and its relevant research questions are put forward.Chapter two makes an elaboration of the theoretical foundation underlying the latest development of present research.
