Functional stylistics, based on Systemic Functional grammar has gained wide popularity from the 19700s. This thesis with the application of the theories and approaches of Functional Grammar, that is, from the perspective of the ideational, the interpersonal and the textual metafunctions makes a stylistic analysis on the famous Canadian novel The Double Hook and illustrates how Sheila Watson conveys and strengthens the relations between style, theme and aesthetic effects through her choice of language structures in the novel.The thesis consists of five chapters:Chapter One is an introduction to style and stylistics, functional stylistics and Sheila Watson's TDH. This chapter points out that the thesis is to discuss the style and theme of TDH with theories and approaches of Functional Grammar.Chapter Two from the perspective of ideational metafunction,that is, the transitivity system. Mental transformation of James from the perplex and passive state to regain his ability to think and judge is vividly depicted and interpreted by the contrast of the proportion of material and mental process in Section 8 and Section 13 in Chapter 5.Chapter Three from the perspective of interpersonal metafunction,mainly mood system in this thesis.
