Confucianism has lost its status as the main stream of Chinese ideologies since the May 4th Movement in 1919, and liberalism and Marxism from the west have widely spread in China from then on. However, today, after more than half a century, we still face lots of questions that are surprisingly similar to those of the May 4th period—the Chinese society has stepped on the stage of modernization, but the factors of pre-modern and post-modern still exist at the same time, we are in a key period of reintegration of social values—as for the problems the modernization faces, the Neo-Confucianism has made a deep exploration and excellent contributions.The thesis contains three parts.Part one, the themes of modern Neo-Confucianism.After The Revolution of 1911 and The May 4th Movement, survival and enlightenment began to be the main melody of the history of modern Chinese thoughts. During this time, although the Confucianism was criticized widely and severely, it's not totally collapsed, more than that, it bounced back through the rising of the Neo-Confucianism. Comparing with the scholars in the time ofThe May 4th who accepted all the western ideas, the Neo-Confucianism put an emphasis on China's traditional culture, it followed the Li School in the dynasties of Song and Ming, and explored the way out for Chinese. The main authors included Xiong Shili, Liang Shumin, Feng Youlan, Mou Zongshan and so on. They developed the Confucian methods and visions from different angles, such as the angle of political philosophy, of the comparison between the Orient and the West, or of the research of the history. They gave the Confucianism new meanings. Those scholars are named"Neo-Confucians", and their systematic academic thoughts that follow the Li School in the dynasties of Song and Ming are named"Neo-Confucianism".Part two, the creations and limits of the modern Neo-Confucianism. The international circumstances the modern Neo-Confucianism faces have been changing all the time.
